MISHAWAKA, IN—There’s a charm when the day of your event lands on its namesake holiday. This is a fun and competitive run (or walk) on the Mishawaka Riverwalk, now in its third year and continuing to grow.
From an inaugural 300 the first year to an expected 500 participants this year, the Cinco de Miles 5K is a festive season opener for runners in Michiana.
Along with introducing a new mariachi band this year, Cinco de Miles 5K creator Ashley Johnston-Meyerdierks and her husband and co-race director Phil Meyerdierks, have a few surprises in store .
In addition to continually tweaking the festivities, post-race food and decorations, age-group categories have been expanded for younger kids. Sponsor Athletico Physical Therapy will be at Central Park again for free injury screenings and post-race stretching. Fleet Feet Sports Mishawaka also returns this year as the presenting sponsor.
Seven years ago, when Ashley completed her first 5K in Seattle and “walked almost all of it,” it gave her the goal to run. Shorty after, she moved to South Bend and wasted no time running the Komen 5K. Her running events grew from 5Ks to half marathons. Then, she took the next step.
“I love racing! Phil encouraged me to put a race together. So I thought about a unique scene and making it a little bit different,” Ashley said. The idea of Cinco de Miles was born—a race on the Mishawaka RIverwalk celebrating Cinco de Mayo with a mariachi band playing at the start and finish of the race, setting the mood and promoting the festivity of the holiday.
When you see Ashley and Phil, pass along an “olé”—this will be their first Cinco de Miles and Mayo as married co-race directors.
