The Jesse Meredith Memorial Run & Soldier Shuffle
Sunday, April 29, Valparaiso, IN, 9:30am start
VALPARAISO, IN—Looking for a nearby late-April rave run route? Soldiers Shuffle is a new 5K event that will be held at beautiful Sunset Hill Farm Park. It is planned as a family event with activities for all ages including face painting, a balloon artist and a visit by a few of the Indianapolis Colt’s cheerleaders. On a more serious note, associate veteran’s organizations will be sharing their information and message.
Corporate and family teams are encouraged and an optional post-race barbecue and party follows the race. Those running to honor a fallen soldier are invited to send photos to firstname.lastname@example.org to be part of a memorial for the event.
The event commemorates Jesse Meredith, a member of the Indiana National Guard who committed suicide as a result of PTSD.
Race developer and director Angie Cossin, founder of Women in Bloom said the event—which also includes a 50-mile motorcycle ride on Sunday—fits their focus of supporting women. Jesse left behind two young children and wife Stephany Meredith, who also served in the National Guard.
“Some of our most endearing clientele are our female veterans,” said Angie. “Returning servicewomen face a myriad of issues and a battlefield of a different kind. They are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. We have made it our mission to try to honor them and alleviate as much of their struggle as we can.
“The concept of Soldiers Shuffle was birthed out of the need to address these issues and raise awareness.”
Organizations also hosting the event along with Women in Bloom are Patriots Training Service Dogs, USA Cares, and Bomber Girls. “Our mission is simple,” Angie said. “To save our soldiers one footstep at a time.”
