SOUTH BEND, IN (May 6, 2019) – After the long winter, spring has finally arrived! May is National Bike Month and May 13th through 19th is the 14th Annual Michiana Bike to Work Week. The goal of this week is to encourage everyone to park the car for the week and to use the bike to get to work and run errands throughout Michiana. This year, Bike Michiana Coalition and Bike Elkhart have partnered to encourage anyone in Elkhart or St. Joseph Counties to try biking to work this year.
Riders can sign up to participate in a Commuter Challenge. It is simple, sign up as an individual and either create a team with your co-workers or join an existing one. Then starting on May 13th, record each trip you take by bike. Each day with a trip will count as a raffle prize entry, so the more you bike, the better the chances to win. Raffle prizes include bike baby seat, bike cleaning kit, free registration to the Pumpkinvine Ride and Amishland Ride, 1-month Membership to Beacon Health & Fitness and more. At the end of the week, your team’s points will be added up to see who really seized the week by bike! You can sign up at www.michianabiketowork.org.
In addition to the challenge, riders can participate in a number of scheduled activities.
To start off the week, Michiana Bicycle Association is hosting a special Bike to Work Week After-Work Ride. It will start at 6:00 pm on Monday, May 13th from the South Bend Farmer’s Market. The Leisure Ride is great for casual riders who want to ride with other bicyclists, but you must wear a helmet.
A free Organic Blueberry Pancake Breakfast, prepared by LaSalle Grill, will be on Tuesday, May 14th. This year, it has been moved to the Jon Hunt Plaza in front of the Morris Performing Arts Center. It free to all bicyclists and begins at 7:00 am and runs through 9:00 am. Local elected officials and ordinary bicyclists will join together sharing a great breakfast in support of local bicycling initiatives.
