NILES, MI — Whether your motivation is to outrace Tom the turkey or get a leg up on burning off the day’s calorie abundance, the true goal of the Niles-Buchanan YMCA Thanksgiving Day Run is to celebrate a day of appreciation with family and friends.

“We are excited to continue the 38-year family-focused tradition that gathers 2,400 participants from more than 30 states,” said Jill Haboush, race director. In the spirit of helping families embrace the tradition, the YMCA offers registration discounts for households with anywhere from two to eight participants.

Come as you are . . . or come dressed for the day. Festivity is encouraged for all the Thanksgiving Day events, with a special focus this on the 1 Mile Fun Run.

The 2019 event promises to be as festive as ever. While costumes are always a welcome sight on the 10K and 5K routes, this year planners are encouraging 1 Mile Fun Run participants to dress the part as well and don their favorite costumes or festive running wear.

It’s all for the fun of it, but of course there will be age-group and overall awards for the 10K and 5K races with trophies awarded to overall male and female winners and medals awarded to the top three females and males in each age group.

Proceeds support the Y’s Annual Campaign that supports youth programming as well as financial assistance to families for memberships through scholarships.
