FMI and to register

Got goal? Why not train for an indoor-outdoor triathlon this spring? Or, double the fun with two. Beacon Health & Fitness is hosting triathlons in March and April at both Elkhart and Granger locations.  Registration for the events is open to the community, with each chip-timed event offering a challenging course twist.

Train laneless! The April 19 sprint and Olympic tris at BHF Elkhart will feature an open-water-style swim, taking out lane mrakers and moving the bulkheads so athletes can swim the perimeter of the pool.

“The Granger location will be showcasing its new outdoor Beacon Trail for the run course,” said Kathleen Kavanagh, event coordinator and fitness manager at Beacon Health & Fitness. “At the Elkhart location, we are planning an open-water-style swim, using the larger-than-Olympic-size pool where we’ll have participants swimming from buoy to buoy.” Yes, seasoned triathletes, that means no lane lines. This is a unique opportunity where athletes will swim the perimeter of the pool until they complete their swim distance. The run leg at the Elkhart location will also be outdoors on the Riverwalk.

Non-members who register will receive two guest passes to use for training at the club prior to the event and of course, all experience levels are welcome. (Newbies take note, indoor tris are a great way to ease into the sport, with a stationary bike ride and pool swim.)

OLYMPIC DIVISION $65

500 yard swim, 24.8 mile bike, 6.2 mile run

SPRINT DIVISION $50

750 yard swim, 12.4 mile bike, 3.1 mile run

Swim Clinics — Last year, many also took advantage of the pre-event swim clinics structured to help improve stroke technique and efficiency. “The swim clinics serve as a great prep for the triathlons, or to simply brush up on your stroke and technique for the upcoming tri season,” said Kathleen. Each location will host a clinic that meets weekly, four weeks prior to the tri event, but not limited to triathlon registrants.

  • Granger location: Mondays at 6pm starting March 2.
  • Elkhart location: Wednesdays at 6pm starting March 25.
